Technical Direction

Generating a tangible world from abstract ideas, drawings, and conversations, the Technical Direction Program prepares students to work in collaborative design, fabrication, and technical management.

By nature a changing and evolving profession, a technical director leads a team of designers, technicians and craftspeople to bring ideas into reality. The CalArts experience affords students to learn a unique mix of skills, executing a diverse range of projects using traditional and emerging technologies.

The Program is based on four basic principles: fabrication, communication, management, and artistic awareness—with an emphasis on technical design and management. These principles are integral to every production experience and all métier coursework. Graduates emerge with the skills to be innovative forces in theater, as well as immersive environments, film/video, art, and many other creative avenues.
