Zelia ZZ TAN is a choreographer, multimedia artist, and researcher. Her creations explore the future, focusing on presence and identity, and she develops hybrid performances using motion capture, XR, avatars, and immersive technologies. Zelia directed REfract (2025), a hybrid performance featuring a solo dancer interacting with avatars and VR technology, commissioned by the West Kowloon Cultural District and co-produced with the Goethe-Institut, presented at Gray Area, the Game Development Conference, and other venues. She designed video projection for live performances, including The Katha and Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Half God of Rainfall. She worked with The Human Expression dance company from Singapore to present Strangely Familiar (2025) in Asia+ Festival. She was a professional dancer with the City Contemporary Dance Company from 2019 to 2023. Her dance films have been featured in 18 film festivals. Zelia’s choreographic projects include FoxTail (2024) at the CalArts Expo Festival, His Temple (2023) at the French Arts Festival, and Accelerating Dimension (2022) at the Phygital_D Festival. In 2022, she co-founded TechDanceLab, an experimental art platform. She has collaborated with master artists such as Gilles Jobin and Sasha Waltz. Zelia holds a BFA from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (2019) and is currently pursuing her MFA at CalArts (expected 2026), double-majoring in Interactive Media for Performance (Theatre) and Choreography (Dance).
