YJ studied Scene Design during his undergraduate years and worked as a scene designer in South Korea for about five years. He is currently pursuing his MFA in Scene Design at CalArts. His work focuses on creating spaces that carry meaning and support storytelling, rather than functioning as simple backgrounds. He approaches the stage as an active element of the narrative, exploring how space shapes emotion and story. He also understands scene design as a collaborative process. He believes that space and objects gain new meaning through their interaction with lighting, video, and performers. His design goal is to create environments where different elements exist independently while also working together. When these elements come together, they form a richer and more dynamic theatrical experience.
